ASHOKA STUPA

THE GREAT ASHOKA STUPA dedicated to TARA

After the rather cruel and barbarous destruction of Kalingan,  King Ashoka was appalled by what he saw and converted to Buddhism and became the first Great Buddhist Emperor of India. He created a social system unknown to this present age. To pacify the land he erected STUPAS in honour of the Buddhas teachings and for the benefit of the people all over his kingdom. The Ashoka stupas are based on a suggestion by Buddha himself and became a the model for all later stupas that were built all over Asia ever since.
4 of the Ashoka stupas were erected in the Kindom of Nepal, the birthland of Buddha, marking the 4 corners of the city of Patan, Kathmandu valley. Despite their historical meaning they remain unheeded today. Three of them are grown with plants and grass to generate an most fascinating aggregation of architecture and organic vitallity.

Learning about them and visting them the inspiration came up to build a similar spirited Stupa for the first time in the West.

As the Buddha taught, the contruction of a Stupa will create immesurable benefits for all sentient beings. He predicted that as a quiet point of reverence and meditation it will pacify the land and will be of major support to sentient beings on their way to liberation.

At the 20th anniversary of the Pauenhof DHARMASALA in Germany, an association of 2 Buddhist centres, ( northern & southern Buddhism ) we are very glad to announce the construction of the ASHOKA STUPA dedicated to the meeting of tose two traditions  and the Great Mother Goddess TARA, the enlightended principle of BUDDHA.

During our visit to Boudhnath in spring 2011 we introduced the idea of the Ashoka Stupa in the West to the monasteries and Lamas here. The kindness and generostity of some of the Lamas and monasteries were of such overwhelming nature that at some point they left us astonished.

Within the relics that were donated are extremely precious remains of the ashes ond other substances of H E Chökyed Trichen Rinpoche and larger ammounts of the body salt of Jamyang Kontrul Rinpoche and Rinzel containing traces of the following:
The bones of Shakyamuni Buddha of Kushinagar,
thread of the meditation belt of Milarepa,
Naropas bone ornament from Jay Rinpoches Statue,
Tilopas bone relics,
Thra Druk TARA‘s relics from the spoken statue
and others.

The Stupa is dedicated to PEACE & HARMONY of the World Cultures and the auspicious meeting of the two Buddhist traditions in the West. This is symbolised by the mother goddess TARA and to one of the most prominent practitioner of the TARA TANTRA : H.E. Chökye Trichen Rinpoche. His ashes and complete relics and many other historic relics of immense preciousness are kept inside the Stupa to support all peaceful and wholesome activities in the world.

MAY ALL BEINGS BE HAPPY

The venerable Bhante Sujiva has donated all the plants and we have received various donations from other Buddhist Centres and private persons as well.

The Great Stupa were inaugurated in 2011 in both traditions.
